Introduction
Who is the course for?
Cambridge English for Schools (CES) is a four level course, plus a Starter for complete beginners, aimed at young students. Level 1 is for students who have done some English before or who have used the CES Starter Level.
For what type of teaching situations is it intended?
CES has been designed with a variety of possible situations in mind - from small classes with flexible furniture arrangements to fairly large classes with furniture fixed to the ground, from schools with considerable resources to schools with limited funds. The realities of many classes -with learners of varying abilities and varying levels of motivation and cooperation - have been given serious consideration and have shaped the approach and philosophy of the course (see Rationale, page 7).
What does it aim to do?
CES contains four different syllabuses.
1 At the centre of the course is the language syllabus. Through it, students develop their knowledge of English and their abilities to use English in various ways.
2 Complementing this, the course has an education syllabus. The materials aim to broaden the students' knowledge of the world and to build on what they are learning in other areas of their school life. Topics presented in CES, therefore, contain curriculum links with History, Science, Geography and so on. The materials also aim to develop cross-curriculum attitudes and abilities, such as working independently, caring for the environment, working with others and so on. In addition, the materials focus on cross-cultural topics, aiming to develop the students' knowledge of English-speaking societies and, through them, learn about their own society.
3 At the same time, a learner-involvement syllabus aims to help the learners to take more responsibility for their own learning and to feel that their classes are 'their own'.
4 In addition to these aims for the learners, CES also aims to offer support for teachers in a number of ways:
• Detailed practical suggestions in an easy-to-use A to Z of methodology (see page 116).
• Easy-to-use Unit notes (see page 21).
• Additional Unit notes on teaching classes with mixed abilities (see any Topic or Language focus Unit),
• Photocopiable language and pronunciation worksheets (see page 153).
• Advice on how the course may be lengthened or shortened (see page 16).
• Suggestions for investigating classroom language learning (see any Topic or Language focus Unit).
• A list of useful classroom phrases (see page 172).
How long does the course take?
Each level (except the Starter) of CES is intended for approximately 80—100 hours of classroom work. However, the course has a flexible design enabling it to be made either shorter or longer (see pages 16-17, for more details).
What does the course consist of?
Each level has six components: A Students Book A Teacher's Book
A Workbook A Class Cassette Set
A Workbook Cassette A classroom Video
See CES 1 at a glance, page 12, for more details of each component.
