canadian explorers The vikings were the first Europeans to see the New World. In 981 Erik the Red sailed from Greenland into Baffin Bay. According to the early Norse stories known as sagas, he seems to have crossed Davis Strait and lived for some time on Baffin Island, thus becoming the first white resident in the country that is now called Canada. In 985 Bjarni Herjolfsson, a Norse merchant trader living in Iceland, set out to sail to Greenland. A fierce storm blew him to the southwest, and he sighted an unfamiliar coast. It was Newfoundland. Bjarni did not land, but sailed northward up the coast of Labrador before heading back east for Greenland. Leif Eriksson, son of Erik the Red, listened to Bjarni's story. He bought his ship, and set out to see this new place. He landed in Newfoundland, where vines and wild grapes grew and game and salmon abounded. He named the place Vinland, and stayed there for a year before returning to Greenland. Several years later, the largest of all the recorded Viking expeditions sailed from Greenland to find Vinland, which had become famous since the return of Leif Eriksson.
