"Magna et iam longa exspectatio est, quam frustrari adhuc et differre non debes..." ("The expectation has been so long and intense, that you have no right to back out or to postpone...") Pliny the Younger, ep.2.10.2 Whithin the context of international scientific cooperation, the present booklet intends to provide a concrete contribution to the deeply problematic area of the therapy of lung and pleural tumors. It ideally crowns a period of four years' work during which my surgical activity has been often interspersed with clinical workshops abroad, rich in fruitful personal contacts, and aimed at putting me in touch with the most originál research work and reflection in the field of thoracic surgical oncology. This volume mainly consists of a selection of the lectures given at the "Colloquium on Surgical and Bronchological Aspects of Lung Cancer", which I had the opportunity to organize during the course of the IV World Congress of the WAB (World Association for Bronchology), held in Romé on June 10-13, 1984. During that meeting, wich lasted a whole day, originál contributions by somé of the most important Cancer Centers in the world were presented and discussed in a friendly and attentive atmosphere. I am glad to have now the opportunity to present, in their definitive version, these reports, each dealing with a different aspect of such a wide surgical field. These collective reports should be a stimulus for our continued efforts to keep up to date as required by the rapidly changing concepts of patient management. I want to heartily thank all of my Colleagues who accepted the invitation to the "Colloquium" as guest-lecturers, but I want to express my particular gratitude to Prof. Clifton F. Mountain, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Thoracic Surgery, M.D. Anderson Hospitál, Houston (Texas), who, in all these years, has been to me a generous mentor, full of precious and enlightening advices. I alsó want to thank Prof. Salvatore
