Background on the SzIE-PU relationship and the workshop topie Erika MICHÉLI Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry Szent István University, 2103 Gödöllő Purdue University and Szent István University (earlier Gödöllő University of Agriculture), signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 1991. Since that time the collaboration has been significant in numerous fields. Two, joint research projects were supported by the U.S.-Hungary Science & Technology Fund, one in Agronomy and the other in Agricultural Engineering. OECD supported three research projects, two in Integrated Pest Management and one in plánt biotechnology. During this time strong collaboration developed in education as well. Our undergraduate student exchange has involved more than 100 students. We have begun involving faculty as co-supervisors of graduate students between the Universities. Previous cooperation and collaboration of participants ensures open discussion on the topic of carbon sequestration Concern has been increasing about the considerable buildup of carbon dioxidé (CO2) and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Soils contain a major pool of the active organic carbon (OC) reserve on the Earth. Besides having an influence on important soil physical, chemical properties and fertility organic matter (SOM) - through its transformation - has an impact on the atmospheric C02 concentrations. Carbon accumulation in soils can be greatly improved by various forms of conservation management, such as no-till. The workshop brings together cropping system experts, soil fertility specialists, soil taxonomists, agronomists, agricultural engineers, agricultural economists and educational specialists írom Hungary and Indiana to discuss causes of accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, measurement and monitoring tools for quantifying and verifying soil carbon sequestration rates and greenhouse gas emissions, techniques and practices for soil carbon sequestration and soil conservation, economic implications of research and education in the area.
