Foreword
It is a great pleasure to introduce this new volume on cardiopulmonary bypass skilfully edited by Professor Kenneth Taylor. Little more than 30 years have passed since Gibbon's report of the first successful cardiac repair with cardiopulmonary bypass. This accomplishment transformed cardiac surgery and facilitated practical application of advances in surgical technique, physiology, myocardial protection, and immunology. Since this seminal achievement, dramatic progress has been made, with ever-increasing emphasis on minimizing physiologic derangement associated with bypass of the heart and lungs. In modern cardiac surgery, thorough and current understanding of the mechanical, physiological, and pathophysiological aspects of cardiopulmonary bypass is essential, and this excellent work will serve as a background and reference resource for the surgeon or anaesthesio-logist in training and for the established practitioner.
