Foreword
Cavalcade of Poems is constructed on the principle that Robert Frost expressed so well in the dedication of You Come Too, where he suggested that no poetry was good enough for young readers "that wasn't equally good for their elders." For years we have carried on with students a kind of conversation about poems. The poems in this book are partly the preference of students, partly our selection. The choices of students have had to meet the test of our interest, and our choices have had to catch the attention of the students.
The poems are arranged in eight groups, with the divisions of course slightly arbitrary and overlapping. Selection came, however, before grouping; every poem is in the book on its own merit.
A poem belongs to the reader, provided the reader is willing to listen to the poet. Discovery may come on the first reading, or the twenty-first.
