It has all the features that people have come to expect from our highly-regarded and well-established rangé of dictionaries. It provides in a compact easy-to-read form a wide-ranging selection of words likely to be encountered by the modern reader and speaker of English in his day-to-day activities. There is alsó good coverage of literary vocabulary and special attention has been given to technical words and meanings, which are of increasing importance in the modern world. We have included a large number of colloquial and figurative expressions which play an important and colourful part in the English language. This dictionary is therefore an invaluable vocabulary guide for the modern user of English, bearing in mind the diversity of interests common today. Derivations of most of the words have been included to allow fuller understanding of the words. Where the derivation is absent it is either self-evident or of unknown or uncertain origin. One note on spelling is necessary. We have throughout adopted the spelling -ise for verbs corresponding to French verbs ending in -iser, Latin ending in -izáre, Greek ending in -izein (eg realise, baptise, catechise, bowdlerise).
