Batter's Error
"Keep your eye on the ball, Riley," Kaylee said for the umpteenth time. With the cap pulled low over her forehead and the way she chewed a big hunk of bubble gum, she looked just like a pitcher for the major leagues.
I concentrated on smacking the ball to kingdom come. I was determined not to make a fool of myself when I went out for the Davenport Summer League. To do that, I had to get the hang of swinging at a ball going the speed of light. That's where Kaylee came in. Her aim would make Billy the Kid jealous. She was better at pitching a ball than any other fifth grader in Davenport. Especially me. Besides that, she was my best friend.
It was one of those warm March Saturdays.
