Preface
This Outline presents the essentials of child psychology and repre-sents various schools of thought concerning individual growth and development. It includes the main points elaborated in twenty-four leading textbooks in child psychology. The Outline, therefore, com-prises a summary of current knowledge based upon research on the development of children from prebirth growth through early adoles-cence.
Each of the many facets of an individual's developing personality follows what can be regarded as a progressive pattern of growth. In this Outline has been traced, for each area of development, the gen-eral pattern of maturation in terms of the environmental influences that may either further or retard natural growth. The many individual deviations that occur among children are given attention. Although the treatment of child development in this Outline must, of necessity, be relatively brief, it nevertheless is comprehensive.
True-false and multiple-choice questions for each chapter have been provided. These total more than 700 questions, which will help the student focus upon and evaluate many important ideas in each chapter. There is also a final examination consisting of general or over-all questions, enabling the student to make a thorough survey of the field as a whole.
For a more detailed analysis of any of the principal topics dis-cussed, the reader is referred to the "Selected References" at the end of each chapter. These references have been chosen with great care, and include the latest excellent contributions to this field of study, as well as a few earlier reports of research that are basic to an under-standing of child nature.
