Bővebb ismertető
Introduction This dictionary has been planned to help children from the age at which they are established readers until they are old enough to make full use of aduit dictionaries. The vocabulary is that of pupils from their first years in junior school until their first year in secondary school - or the oldest class in middle schools. To use a dictionary at all, children must have a minimai sight vocabulary, and so many words that appear in first reading books have been omitted, as have many simple three- and four-letter words, which children know and find easy to understand, read, and spell. Thus, the book does not contain a full vocabulary of all children in the age rangé. Instead, it is designed to help children to read, to understand unfamiliar words, and to develop and increase their vocabulary and confidence in using words. It aims to support them in their efforts to write letters, stories, and accounts of events with increased imagination, understanding, and accuracy. The entries have been selected to reflect the language met in school and in everyday life and the meanings reflect current generál usage. The dictionary alsó aims to help children with their spelling and particular care has been taken to include difficult spellings and derivatives. For instance, many children can spell be gin, but has beginning one n or two? Finally, the book has been designed to resemble aduit dictionaries in style and formát. We hope that it will help to teach children to use dictionaries correctly and encourage them to consult dictionaries regularly, thus forming a habit that will be rewarding throughout a lifetime.
