Chinese PorofilesZhang Xinxin Sang YeThese short profiles are from a collection which aims to present the experiences and attitudes of a hundred Chinese from different walks of life.During the past year we travelled to many parts of the country and have now finished the bulk of our project. We have a number of places still to visit.A new age, new impressions, exchanged experiences and methods of feedback call for new literary forms. These faithful oral accounts are based on taped or recorded interviews.Owing to habit, temperament or other understandable reasons, some of the people we interviewed asked us not to mention their names or where they worked. For similar reasons some of them may not have stuck strictly to the truth. We have respected their wishes and let them tell their own stories. The hundred subjects chosen are not all "typical characters". Their ideas, lives and hopes may fall short of reflecting the reforms now taking place in our economy. All the same, they still illustrate something of this irresistible trend. This collection of profiles, originally entitled Beijing Man first appeared in various Chinese literary magazines. We have published five in our last issue and here are seven more. TTie selection will later be published as a Panda Book.
