PREFACEThe kind cooperation of the Editors of Acta psychiatrica Scandinavica has made it possible to publish the proceedings of this symposium as a supplement to the journal. The symposium was held at the Hanko Fiord Hotel on Hanka Island situated in the Oslo Fiord. Thirtytwo participants from ten European countries at-tended the conference, which took place just before the llth European Institute on the Prevention and Treatment of Alcoholism in Oslo in June 1965.The papers are arranged in sections, each of which concludes with the discussions relevant thereto. Ali lectures and discussions were tape recorded and the transcripts have been used as the basis for editing of the proceedings. During the editorial process we have tried to adjust the material to the guiding principles of the journal. Further, the text has been checked by well qualified translators. In addition to the reference lists of the individual papers, a generál biblio-graphy and citation index has been compiled. The bibliography includes all papers quoted in the lectures and discussions of the symposium. In the index of authors and discussers, which lists contributions presented by participants of the conference, originál papers are indicated by italics.Indexing terms used in the subject index adhere closely to medical sub-ject headings in Index Medicus and National Library of Medicine Catalog (Nat. Library Med.: Med. Subj. Headings 7, part 2, 1966, US Dept. Health Education and Wellfare). In somé instances new indexing terms had to be introduced in order to obtain suitable dissemination of indexing.Whenever possible, drugs are referred to by their generic names.Chlormethiazole is the British approved name (B. A. N.) for 5(2-chlorethyl)-4-methyl thiazole. The World Health Organization has proposed clomethiazole as an international non-propriatory name (p I. N. N.). In earlier publications the abbreviation S. C. T. Z. has been used for chlormethiazole. Registered trade marks for chlormethiazole are Heminevrin, Hemineurine and Dis-traneurin. Insofar as proprietary names are used in this book they are fol-lowed, the first time, by a superscript.Sódertalje, June 1966.Peter Frisch.
