CITY OF UFiTMBT TÜPU Ü JJliN D U KVjn To the first-time visitor Edinburgh is, indeed, an experience unlike any other. The Castle, visible as it is from almost every point, stands guard over a city that would not have existed without its mighty presence. In its shadow and stretching away down the hill is the Old Town whose grey tenements, wynds, courts and closes speak its secrets, its mysteries, its stories of courage, roguery and passión. From the Castle, down the Royal Mile to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, serene in the shelter of Arthur's Seat, Scotland's turbulent history is clearly evident all around. To the north, across Princes Street, a quieter mood prevails in the Georgián grace of the New Town, with its echoes of the Age of Reason. Yet this harmony, like all else in Edinburgh, owes its allegiance to its first founder on the hill, still intact and impregnable.
