Introduction
This is the sixth cardiovascular conference to be lield at Snowmass-at-Aspen, the purpose of which was to evaluate the current status of treatment and management in the more difficult and ever-changing areas of Cardiology, including acute coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease and congenital heart disease. This is accomplished in part by debates on the question of when to perform valve replacement, the role of surgery in unstable angina and whether total repair should be done in early infancy in congenital heart disease. In view of the rapidly changing knowledge in these areas, the need for constant review of the medical and surgical care is apparent.
The help and advice of Dr. Bruce C. Paton and Dr. James S. Forrester in developing this conference is gratefully acknowledged. I am particularly indebted to Miss Kym Westenberg for her help in the preparation and arrangement of this conference, as well as in editing the manuscripts; to Mrs. Jean Robinson for assistance in coordinating this conference, and to Miss Mary Anne McInerny and Dr. William Likoff of the American College of Cardiology who helped to make this meeting possible.
Appreciation is expressed to Travenol Laboratories Inc. (Morton Grove, 111.), Surgitool Inc. (Pittsburgh Pa.), and Santa Barbara Technology (Santa Barbara, Calif.) for educational grants which supported in part this program.
