PREFACE
This book is intended to be an introduction to clinical pharmacology based on an understanding of general pharmacological principles. For this reason we have concentrated on the mechanisms of drug action in man and the factors influencing them, rather than on the diseases which they are used to treat. Details of dose schedules in the context of such disease states should, therefore, be sought in standard textbooks of therapeutics. General anaesthetics and antiparasitic drugs have been excluded, as they are beyond the scope of a book of this size.
We thank Miss G. Messent and the staff of the Medical Illustration Department of St Bartholomew's Hospital for help in the preparation of the manuscript and illustrations.
