PrefaceAs this book is readied for publication, we look back on the time spent and speculate on the value of this effort. O'Donoghue wrote the first book of note about sports medicine in the United States, and Saunders published it in 1962. Since that time, there have been a number of books with different perspectives and, therefore, of different value to different groups of people. O'Don's book was sports medicine for physicians and athletic trainers at the time, but now there are many disciplines to consider. No longer is the field staked out exclusively for physicians and athletic trainers concerned with the care and prevention of injury, but it encompasses a wide variety of disciplines: sports sciences, internal medicine, rehabilitation, psychology, nutrition, and orthopaedic sports traumatology, among others. We have tried to create a comprehensive book that has value as a reference to clinicians and scientists at all levels of expertise. We believe that, from the student to the basic scientist and the practicing physician, this book will provide valuable information that is practical and can be put to use immediately. This book is dedicated to that original work of O'Donoghue and to the inspiring spirit with which he endowed that book. Just as O'Don did, we present the material from a practical, clinically relevant perspective. The references and selected readings will allow for in-depth investigation and research, but the basic principles are there for immediate application. We owe a great debt to all our contributors, most of whom are over-burdened in their own right. Our thanks for your time and hard work, but most of all, for the outstanding job done. In addition, we must also thank our editorial staff at Saunders including Ed Wickland, Jr., Rosanne Hallowell, and Kathleen McCarthy. They have been most professional in every phase of this project. Finally, in our own offices, Joneva Curtis (WAG) and Debbie Bolin and Elizabeth Shuey (AK) are to be congratulated for their hard work and patience.William A. Grana, M.D.
