GUIDETO THE USE OF THIS BOOKThe purpose of the written word is to communicate. It is obvious that written matter should be easy to read instantaneously. However, the unavoidable splitting of words which occur at, and overrun, line endings, can impede the flow.The aim of this book is to illustrate the basis of correct English word splitting, namely, that the pronunciation of the first part of the word be recognisable before the eye reaches the second part in the succeeding line. Thus the word coincidence must be split co-incidence to ensure that it is not confused with coin-age. In this way continuity is preserved and all other considerations are secondary to this.MethodAll possible divisions have been indicated in this book by a hyphen (-). Where a word overruns the column width, it has been correctly divided and the hyphen used. The double hyphen (*) is used for words normally hyphenated.WarningA split which gives only two letters at the beginning of the second line is never permissible, and one which gives only two letters at the end of the first line is undesirable except where absolutely necessary.Once the criteria of pronunciation and style have been satisfied, etymology and familiarity must be taken into account and these may further reduce the possibility of sphtting.
