INTRODUCTIONThis book has been designed to help all learners of German to get to grips with the grammar of the language, whatever stage you are at in learning German. For beginners, the book provides a clear introduction to all the basic rules and structures, and more advanced learners will find it an invaluable guide for reference and revision. For ease of use, each part of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives etc) has been treated separately (see the list of contents on the next page). Wherever we think a grammatical term may be unfamiliar this has been explained or illustrated at the appropriate point in the text.A special feature of this compact book is the clear demarcation of grammatical points, each treated on a left-hand page, and illustrated by examples in up-to-date German on the opposite right-hand page. The eye is guided instantly to the appropriate example(s) by a system of bracketed numbers, e.g. (-l), (->2) etc, corresponding to an example number on the facing page. This means a clear, uncluttered presentation of the grammatical points, while allowing plenty of space for illustrating them.Particular attention is paid throughout to those areas where German usage differs from English, thus helping the user to avoid the pitfalls of translating English structures by identical structures in German. Further sections at the back of the book give guidance in the use of numbers, and an area where German is very different from English: punctuation.A fully comprehensive index, listing key words in both English and German, as well as grammatical references, completes the book.Abbreviations usedacc. accusativegen.genitivectd. continuedmasc.masculinedat. dativeneut.neuterfern, femininenom.nominativeif. and following pagesP(P)-page(s)
