ARRANGEMENT OF ENTRIES
All main entries are arranged in a single alphabedcal listing, including abbreviadons, foreign words, and combining forms or prefixes. Each such entry consists of a paragraph, with a main, or core, word at the head of it in large bold type. Derived or related words, in smaller bold type, appear later in the paragraph in alphabetical order, with phrases included at the end. Thus, 'labourer' and 'laborious' will be found under 'labour', 'abide by' under 'abide', and so on. Alternative spellings are shown by bracketing optional letters, eg 'judg(e)ment' or by placing the variants side by side (accurs'ed, accurst'); but if the divergence in spelling is very great there is a separate entry.
The part of speech is shown by an abbreviation placed after the word (or its pronunciation), eg 'dog n./ for noun. Words which are used as more than one part of speech are only written out once, the change being indicated by a new part of speech label, eg 'ravage vt. plunder — n. destruction. ' In the case of very short, simple entries, parts of speech may be combined, eg 'jest n./vi. joke.' Spelling of verb parts is indicated in brackets after the verbal definitions, eg 'jab . . . stab (-bb-)'.
When a derived word is included within an entry, its meaning may be understood from the meaning of the headword or another derived word from within the paragraph.
Field labels and usage notes are added in italic type and abbreviated where there will be no confusion.
Although only '-ize' and '-ization' spellings are shown, the reader should understand that spellings in '-ise' and '-isation' are equally acceptable.
