HOW TO USE THE THESAURUS COLLINS MINIGEM THESAURUS is a collection of synonyms arranged, like a dictionary, in a single alphabetical listing of main entry words. Under each of the main entries, the user will find lists of alternative words and phrases of the same or similar meaning, from which the one most appropriate to the context or purpose of the original word can be chosen. The book is easy to use. On looking up the word that forms the starting point, the user will find the synonyms grouped together at the main entry. Even if an entry word has more than one meaning, synonyms for the different meanings will be found at the same entry, grouped in alphabetical lists according to the different senses of the main word. Italic labels I? show the part of speech when this helps to identify the sense; L ^ for instance, at the entry stand, synonyms for two verb meanings and three noun meanings are given. Other labels indicate a synonym that is, when used as a substitute for the S • main entry word, in some way restricted or specialized; for i instance, at the entry rupture, list 3 (Fig.) gives alternatives í; for the figurative sense of the word, while list 4 (Med.) gives the medical term. The English language, with its vocabulary derived from so many different sources, is particularly rich in synonyms or near-synonyms.
