' i v - I ¦ ¦ ' " ¦ i ¦¦ i [¦lilbtti HOW THE DICTIONARY ENTRIES ARE ARRANGED All main entries are given in a single alphabetical listing that includes abbreviations, foreign words, and prefixes and suffixes (combining forms). Each such entry consists of a paragraph with the main word printed at the beginning in large bold type. Within each entry, different meanings of the main word are numbered. After the meanings of the main word come words that are derived from it, printed in smaller bold type, in alphabetical order. These in turn are followed by compounds (if any) formed by the main word with the addition of another word. Derived words and compound words are explained, except when their meaning is obvious from the sense of the main word. Idiomatic phrases associated with the main word come at the end of the entry. The part of speech is shown by an abbreviation placed after the word (or its pronunciation). When a word can be used as more than one part of speech, the change is indicated by a new part-of-speech label. Spellings of irregular noun plurals and verb parts are shown within brackets, printed in bold type. In English many easily understood words are formed by adding prefixes such as non-, re-, un-, etc., to existing words. Such words are included, without definition, at the foot of the page on which they would occur in alphabetical sequence.
