PREFACE
More and more space is being devoted in the specialist literature to geriatrics and gerontology, in particular to their psychosocial aspects. Many of the technical terms being used have simply been taken over from everyday usage or from the vocabularies of medicine, sociology or psychiatry. However, new terms are also being coined, and these have (as yet) no équivalent in other languages; in many cases the (usually English) expression has simply been "naturalized". This often causes confusion, which can hamper communication and give rise to errors in translation.
Against this background, we decided to approach a number of specialists in the field with a view to publishing a four-language dictionary of gériatrie and gerontological terms, and this selection by Professor J.C. Brocklehurst (Manchester), Dr. H. P. von Hahn (Basle), Professor F. Jiménez Herrero (La Coruna), Professor J.P. Junod (Geneva), Professor Ursula Lehr (Bonn), Professor D. Platt (Nuremberg), Professor H. Thomae (Bonn) and Professor N. Zay (Quebec) is the resuit.
The terms included are taken from the vocabulary in everyday use by the compilers themselves and from authoritative textbooks on the subject; very common terms - even médical - however, and expressions which are identical or very similar in the four languages have deliberately been omitted.
A number of the terms have been taken from the glossary published by Professor N. Zay, who kindly gave permission for their use (Dictionnaire-Manuel de Gérontologie Sociale, Québec, Les Presses de l'Université Laval, 1981). To him and to ail the contributors, we express our sincere gratitude, as we do to the INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF GERONTOLOGY, to whom we have dedicated our dictionary.
Neither the publisher nor the authors claim that the dictionary is In any way complété and they would welcome additions, suggestions and corrections with a view to a future édition.
