This volume contains the work presented at the second of four Annual Symposia on Mutant Hemoglobin Dysfunction to be sponsored by the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center of the University of Chicago and funded by the National Institutes of Health. This symposium on Comparative Clinical Aspects of Sickle Cell Disease was held at the University of Chicago Center for Continuing Education, Chicago, Illinois on October 21-22, 1980. Following the Keynote Address by Professor Alex E. Boyo, the Symposium was organized into three parts. The first entitled "The Clinical Picture of Sickle Cell Anémia in Various Parts of the World" contained reports by physicianscientists on their observations of the specific clinical features of the disease in patients from various geographic locales. The second entitled "Clinical Aspects of Sickle Cell Disease" contained reports of the manifestations of sickle cell disease in various organ systems. The third and final part "Present and Future Therapies of Sickle Cell Disease" contained reports on the efficacy of somé currently available therapy for patients with sickle cell disease, and on the rationale for identifying and screening potentially useful antisickling agents.
