IJOH. BRAHMS. VIOLIN CONCERTO D MAJ.Brahms hesitated a long time before he decided to write a Violin Concerto (or the friend of hisyouth, Joseph Joachim. When the work was begun is unknown, but the first copy was finished for certain during the summer of 1878 in Pörtschach, Kärnten. On Aug. 22 nd Brahms sent the Violon part of the first movement to Joachitn with the following remarks: "After having written it out I really don't know what you will make of the solo part 'alone. It was my intention, of course, that you should correct it, not sparing the quality of the composition and that if you thought it not worth scoring, that you should say so. I shall be satisfied if you will mark those parts which are difficult, awkward or impossible to play. The whole affair is in four movements."By return Joachim replied from Salzburg: "It gives me great pleasure to know that you are composing a Violin Concerto in four movements| tool 1 have had a good look at what you sent me and have made a few notes and alterations, but without the full score one can't say much. I can however make out most of it and there is a lot of really good violin music in it, but whether it can be played with comfort in a hot concert-room remains to be seen Cannot we spend a couple of days together?"Joachim proposed to rehearse the Concerto in Berlin, just before Christmas, but on Oct. 23rd Brahms wrote: "I am slow al writing and for first performances!If you think anything of my work, arrange for January. 1 cannot write anything definite at the moment, especially after having blundered through the Adagio and Scherzo") " A few weeks later Brahms asked Joachim to return him his work. Joachim had invited the composer to go on a concert tour with him and Brahms wished to put the Concerto in proper order. "1 have had the Violin part beautifully written out", wrote Brahms, "and would like to send you the score to shew you real hospitality. The middle movements are failures. I have written a feeble Adagio instead . . ." On Dec. 12th Brahms wrote further: "I send you the part herewith and agree to your alterations. The orchestral parts will be ready for Jan. 1st in case you play it in Leipzig. If so, I will meet you in Berlin a few days before . . ." Although the Concerto was full of unusual difficulties, Joachim was willing to play it on Jan. lit 1879 in Leipzig and wished to write the necessary Cadenza for it as soon as possible. The performance took place, but Brahms did not consider the work was ready for publication. He again asked Joachim's advice as to alterations, as he wished to study it with an "inferior violinist", Hugo Heennann, of Frankfurt, fearing that Joachim was not bold and strong enough in interpretation.
