Preface This 43rd edition of Current Therapy continues the tradition established by the late Howard Conn in 1949. Each year, a new edition is published offering fresh information from new authors who are recommended by authorities in that field. This year, more than 75% of the material is entirely new and the remainder is thoroughly revised and updated. Premenstrual syndrome has been added as a new topic in view of the attention it has been receiving in the literature and in the public press. Our goal is to provide the practicing physician with an up-to-date definitive reference for managing problems frequently encountered in practice. The authors are experts who recommend the drugs and therapeutic methods they have found most effective when a large number of possibilities exist. Often these recommendations are based on their extensive experience or recent research and may not yet be reported in the traditional literature. The editorial staff at Saunders are experts in editing manuscripts so that the final product is concise and easy to read. The objective is to provide the busy physician with answers to specific questions that arise while caring for a patient. In addition to the copy editors and John Dyson, Senior Medical Editor at W. B. Saunders, I want to thank Roxy Cuddy, my editorial assistant, and the pharmacologists in my department, Barry Carter and Lucinda Miller, who check the accuracy of every drug recommendation found in this text.
