IntroductionThe Second Edition of Contemporary Diagnosis and Management of Lipid Disorders contains several important changes from the previous edition, which was published in 1999. The principal change involves the inclusion of the new guidelines issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP). Both sets of guidelines focus on strategies for reducing the risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). The Scientific Statement from the AHA presents dietary and lifestyle recommendations that can have beneficial effects on body weight, cholesterol and Upoprotein profile, and blood pressure. The guidelines in the Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (Adult Treatment Panel [ATP] III) focus on a comprehensive approach involving both therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC) and, when appropriate, drug treatment. These two reports are fundamental to cardiovascular care aimed at reducing the burden of CHD in the United States.According to data from the AHA, there were 459,841 deaths from CHD in the United States in 1998representing 1 of every 5 deaths.
