THE FONTANA ECONOMIC HISTORY OF EUROPE General Editor: Carlo M. Cipolla There is at present no satisfactory economic history of Europe - covering Europe both as a whole and with particular relation to the individual countries - that is both concise enough for convenient use and yet full enough to include the results of individual and detailed scholarship. This series is designed to fill that gap. Unlike most current works in this field the Fontana Economic History of Europe does not end at the outbreak of the First World War. More than half a century has elapsed since 1914, a half-century that has transformed the economic background of Europe. In recognition of this the present work has set its terminál date at 1970. The source material available for Europe in the last half-century is immensely greater than that for the whole world from the remotest origins of economic life. The scale of these concluding volumes reflects this fact.
