This publication is part of the continuing SIU series summarizing the presentations made at the round-table conference on continent urinary diversion during the 22nd Meeting of the Société Internationale d'Urologie in Seville, Spain. The aim of this conference was to analyse the development of urinary diversion over the past half decade and review the cstate-of-the art' in this most challenging field. Many of the contributors to this book are true pioneers in urinary diversion surgery and have developed techniques that have become standard therapy worldwide. What purpose among the flood of monographs on urinary diversion does this publication serve? Continent Urinary Diversion attempts to elucidate the solved and unsolved problems of urinary diversion and open up the field to a broad international readership, especially to those who cannot yet decide on any specific surgical technique for continent urinary diversion. Emphasis has alsó been placed on the special situation of third world countries regarding continent diversion in chapters 5 and 10. An excellent overview of the use of the bowel in urologic surgery is given in the first section of this book. Never before has the physiology and pathophysiology of isolated and detubularized bowel been so extensively and brilliantly reviewed. This is a treasure for anyone interested in the subject from either a clinical or an experimentál point of view. In the second section, the pioneers of continent diversion such as Ashken, Benchekroun, Camey, Kock and LeDuc have the word. They summarize the history of continent diversion and from their point of view provide an outlook on what future developments might look like. Their chapters are not merely of historical interest but provide important and valuable insights into the development of the field. The fruits of meticulous follow-up for over 20 years (see Chapter 4) now allow a first careful assessment of long-term effects on the upper urinary tract and of changes that urine may cause to the intestinal mucosa. Subsequent chapters in the third section detail specific contemporary techniques of continent urinary diversion. The pioneers or authors with the largest series of the respective technique were asked to present their data and share their experience with the reader.
