Coronary heart disease is the primary cause of morbidity and mortality in the civilised world. It is estimated that in the industrialised countries up to a quarter of all deaths are directly or indirectly attributable to it.
Even if the increase in incidence of coronary heart disease and its sequelae appear dramatic, it is, however, a disease which should not simply be accepted by the patient. In the first place, there are many ways of protecting oneself against it and, secondly, nowadays the disease can be diagnosed at such an early stage and so reliably that a treatment strategy tailored specifically to the requirements of the individual patient can considerably improve his prognosis.
In order to avoid the risk factors and to identify coronary heart disease at an early stage, it is not just the patient himself who must be well informed, but also the general practitioner and the pharmacist.
