PREFACE Many books devoted to Grammar are published every year. Most of them are concerned more with the points of grammar which seldom arise than with matters of every day interest. They thrash out things which concern very few of us, and consequently frighten the average individual who is anxious to improve his store of knowledge. What the ordinary English man or woman needs is a work which picks out the pitfalls of Grammar and explains them lucidly. They do not wish to be bothered with technical terms, or with information compiled for examination purposes. They want a readable book, which goes straight to their weak points and clears them up, so that they may be able to speak and write more accurately in the future. The only book we know which attempts this purpose is the one that the reader now holds in his hands.
