Bővebb ismertető
To the InstructorCorrect Writing, Fourth Edition, is a revision of past éditions, enlarging and improving the material contained in those earlier éditions. It has been updated in the light of universal needs in colleges which now find it necessary to return to the teaching of basic grammar, punctuation, and mechanics before moving on to instruction in composition and rhetoric. The authors have amplified the body of grammatical information to a considérable degree through the addition of définitions of terms and careful explanations of the principles involved in sentence structure. These définitions and explanations çome at the earliest mention of a term, so that students will not have to continue their study of a grammatical principle without a clear understanding of what they have already been told. Discussions which may be enlarged upon in other chapters carry convenient cross-references that point the reader to further information available on a given topic. Moreover, for handy reference, a new feature of the Fourth Edition is a comprehensive Glossary of Grammatical Terms, with easily grasped examples accompanying the définitions. As it has done since its first édition, Correct Writing combines the best features of a textbook of grammar and composition, a workbook of exercises, and a reference handbook. Wherever possible, the exercises have been simplified to make them more than usually illustrative of the grammatical principles involved. The exposition of the various aspects of grammar and sentence structure is presented to the student in as simple terms as possible and is more extensive than that in most other workbooks. Although the discussion of many aspects of grammar is not intended to be exhaustive, information in this book is thorough enough for a student to grasp and to learn without having constantly to rely on the instructor's further discussion. The Glossary of Faulty Diction, which has been updated and enlarged for this édition, is an especially useful feature, and it is accompanied by exercises so that the information it contains may be applied in a practical way as well as used for reference. The treatment of punctuation is a strong feature of Correct Writing, because rules of punctuation are given in individual chapters in relation to the basic principles of sentence structure under discussion. When students reach Chapter 19, which is devoted exclusively to punctuation, they will already have learned most of the rules in the chapter. This chapter can then serve as a review of the subject instead of a listing of arbitrary rules to be memorized. There are, how-ever, some occasions when it seems appropriate simply to cite a rule without attempting theoretical explanations that would defeat the purpose of the text as an elementary handbook for grammar and composition. A rule governing punctuation, grammar, or sentence structure may be susceptible to modification or
