Where were criminals executed?
Executions took place in large
open-air buildings called amphitheatres. The Romans had very bloodthirsty tastes, and huge crowds flocked to amphitheatres
to watch people die. So fan nineteen Roman amphitheatres have been found in Britain.
he worp 'grime' comes from latin, the language of the romans,
who conquered much of Britain almost 2,000 years ago. They were the first people to have law courts, trials and written laws.
Did the Romans have different laws for different people?
In Roman Britain, people belonged to different social groups, and each
group had different rights. At the top, with the most rights, were the Roman citizens.
Below them, were free non-citizens. At the bottom were slaves, people owned by other people, and they
had no rights at all. Punishments were much harsher for slaves and non-citizens than for citizens.
Why were thieves cursed?
When people were robbed, they often asked the gods to punish the thief. They wrote curses on little sheets of lead and offered them to the gods, burying them or throwing them into holy springs. A typical curse from Bath says; 'Docimedis has lost two gloves. He asks that the person who stole them lose his mind and his eyes in the temple'a.
A woman asks the gods to punish a criminal.
