Introduction - 1 BACKGROUND AND PHILOSOPHY 1.1 WHAT IS CRISS CROSS? CRISS CROSS is a course for secondary level students of English in Central Europe. It has been designed both for those who have done English at Primary School, and for those who studied a different foreign language at Primary Level (but thus have an experience of learning a foreign language). 1.2 WHO IS IT FOR? CRISS CROSS is for the teachers (and students) who want to combine the best of the two worlds, Central European and international. It is designed to build on the solid tradition of foreign language teaching in the region, and to provide material that satisfies the needs of learners and teachers today. 1.3 WHAT IS ITS PHILOSOPHY? CRISS CROSS has been designed to reflect the belief that foreign language learning needs to : - focus on essentials; - provide a core of key grammar and vocabulary which can be built around; - ensure a solid methodological framework in which teaching and learning can take place; - be culturally stimulating and suited to the learner's own environment; - recognise the need for cross cultural awareness and a European dimension to education; - support and also extend the teacher. Native speaker of English with experience in Central Europe (NEST) - wide experience - native speaker insights into the target language - 'insider' understanding of English-speaking cultures 1.4 HOW IS 'CRISS CROSS' DIFFERENT? The Student's Books are written by a core team of authors who have long-term practical experience in the region, with ongoing advice and comment from local teams of consultants, some of whom have also written the accompanying country-specific Practice Books. The Practice Books are specific to each country, and have been written by practising teachers who share the same linguistic and cultural backgrounds as the teachers and students who will use them. Thus these Practice Books are not simply 'local versions' of a core international Workbook; each has been written independently from those in the other countries, and has interpreted the language syllabus and Student's Book material in the cultural and linguistic way most appropriate to that particular country. Each thus reflects a specific national interaction with the foreign language and culture. This interaction between NEST and non-NEST, and the local, regional and British, gives CRISS CROSS its unique and very European flavour. Péter Medgyes discusses the complementary and differing strengths of Non-Nests and Nests in his book The Non-native Teacher (MEP 1994).
