Foreword
As the President of the Province of Pordenone, I havetheduty and honour of giving my best regards to everyone here: the authorities, the delegates from both the regional and local administrations and in particular. I wish to welcome every member of Cost 814 Action, coming from all the European regions and from many other countries of the world.I have to congratulate Cost 814 members, subdivided into five groups, on their valuable research carried out during an 8-year period. These groups will bring here the results of their research with the aim of further developing agriculture in the cool and wet regions of Europe, such as the mountain areas of the Italian Alps in our region and province. The experts present have the great merit of fostering the agriculture of these areas through scientific investigation and knowledge, enhancing production, upholding traditions and improving the natural quality of the local products.
It istheduty of the regional, national and EU politicians to help farmers and peoples from areas disadvantaged due to climate, orography and social conditions and to make their economy equal to those ofthe most favourable areas. This will be the object of this important European meeting, thanks to the European Community which has financially supported the researches of many leading scientists present. Politicians must put these technical results to good use in order to choose the best options.
I wish to express the Province of Pordenone's gratitude for the actuality offered by Costof hostingthe Final Convention of this European Action.The Provincial Administration considers this European Action a strategic sector for the Province's economy and. for this reason, it is growing and booming. SAASD in fact will soon have adequate and prestigious premises - Villa Carinzia.
I also wish to express our pride in hosting not only the scientists who have been working duringthis period, but also the delegates ofthe 32 European nations belonging to the Management Committee and among them, on behalf of Italy, the Head of our Agriculture Sector.
In conclusion. I trust all delegates will derive valuable benefits from their work during these four days of thriving activity. I wish to give my regards to the associate delegates too; their social and cultural programme will also be quite busy and enjoyable.
