She had meant to be up in time to stop them going without her, but she woke to empty sleeping bags. Why didn't Connla wake her? He always stood up for her against her brother, so why not this time? She crawled out of the tent, the dew on the canvas flap damp against her skin, and stood barefoot in the wet grass. She strained to see if she could spot them, but the trees were dark and the trail empty, so she ducked back inside the tent and lay down again, aware of the silence and upset that they had left her behind.
