Between 1975 and 1979, David worked at hotels in Havana, Playa Jibacoa, Varadero, and Isia de la Juventud as the representative of a Canadian tour company. During the 1980s, he wrote pioneering travel guidebooks to Alaska-Yukon and the Pacific Islands. His South Pacific Handbook, now in its 7th edition, was the original guide to the South Seas. Just prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall, he led Lonely Planet into Eastern Europe with the first three editions of Eastern Europe on a shoestring, which he researched and wrote single-handedly. Many other writers have followed in his footsteps.
FROM THE AUTHOR
In this book I've tried to be honest and say what I really think without covering up for anyone. The field research was done incognito, and this book isn't an 'official' view; in fact, I admit I'm sometimes politically incorrect. It's hard to write about Cuba without being considered controversial by somebody, and the negative approach usually taken by the US mass media certainly doesn't foster understanding. If my book fires you up and makes you want to discover what's really going on, I have achieved my goal.
Many kind people had a hand in researching this book, some indirectly by answering my questions, and others through the comments they sent to the publisher. Their names are listed toward the end of this volume. By sharing their many experiences, they helped keep the wheel turning. However, the one person whose advice and support made it all possible for me was my wife, Ria de Vos.
This book is dedicated to the Cuban people themselves. May they overcome their present difficulties and have a happy and prosperous future.
