AUTHOR'S NOTE
Approximately one hundred and fifty people were interviewed for this book. All of them gave freely of their time, many of them on several occasions, to discuss events which awakened painful memories. I am deeply grateful for their understanding and cooperation in a project which may be the first of its kind to examine, in very personal terms, the effects of a deeply intrusive trauma on an unprepared community. Trauma is always easier to bury than to talk about. The emotional pain of reliving intolerable events can be overwhelming, which makes my debt to those who submitted to lengthy interviews all the greater. Some people, understandably, requested anonymity. These, therefore, are pseudonymns: Virginia Dean, Jessica and Sandra Feld-man, Emily Fletcher, Judith Gilbert, the Johnstons, Leonora Kahn, Jennifer and Robert Malcolm.
