Preface
To the Student:
Deutsche Denker und Forscher consists of eight original
essays, dealing with the achievements of outstanding Ger-
mans. These essays are to give you practice in the reading
of expository prose, that is, in that style of writing which
you encounter in publications of a reportorial, descriptive,
or scientific nature. It is a language with a style of its own,
found in newspapers and magazines, in biographical and
critical writings in general, and in publications in the fields
of natural and social sciences in particular. The book is in-
tended for use after you have gained some familiarity with
the rudiments of German, and it should also help you ac-
quire such a reading knowledge of that language as is
usually expected of graduate students in the natural or so-
cial sciences.
To assist you in the translation, footnotes are given,
particularly in the early essays. Here you will find com-
mentaries and translations of syntactical difficulties wher-
ever they occur the first time. In such cases, frequent refer-
ence is made to the "Translation Aids" following the texts.
Words which we feel should become part of your vocabu-
lary are translated. Those of lesser frequency are given in
parentheses.
There are three types of exercises at the end of each
essay except the last: Questions to test your comprehension
of the text; a Vocabulary Review to check your advance
