Since that time -besides writing papers on the placenta which are regarded by gynaecologists as the basis of postgraduate education - he has continued to work on the pancreas, an organ which still presents many puzzles In its exocrine and endocrine functions alike. He is convinced that close cooperation with the clinicians is the only way in which they can be solved.Becker is the autor of Volume 6 ("The Pancreas") in the multivolume textbook and reference work "Spezielle pathologische Anatomie" (edited by W. Doerr, G. Seifert and E. Uehlinger. Berlin, Springer, 1973). Research on the anatomy and biochemistry of the pancreatic islets is steadily advancing deeper into submicroscopic regions and is gradually bringing us nearer to an understanding of the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus; sooner or later this approach will undoubtedly lead us to a specific remedy for the disease.
