ForewordI am proud to represent my cardiovascular surgical colleagues, Drs. R.B. Karp, N.T. Kouchoukos, A.D. Pacifico, G.L. Zorn, and R.B. Shepard, in writing a foreword to this superb monograph by our associates, Drs. Waldo and MacLean. They have brought to the cardiovascular surgical program at the University of Alabama in Birmingham an expertise in cardiology, in general, and particularly in the area of cardiac arrhythmias, that has been of inestimable value to our patients and of enormous educational and research impact. This monograph completely and elegantly defines the medical-surgical aspects of cardiac arrhythmias foUovwng open heart surgery. Epicardial wires have come to be, for our surgical group, a necessity in the intra- and postoperative management of cases after nearly all kinds of operations. The appropriate use of these wires for diagnosis has placed therapy on a sound basis. Their use therapeutically for cardiac pacing in the treatment of certain types of cardiac arrhythmias has been a dramatic advance in our judgment. This all has been a part of the contribution of Drs. Waldo and MacLean to our programs, and is described in detail in this work. The scientific content of this monograph is matched by the elegant simplicity of the presentation. I am very proud to have the privilege of writing a foreword for such a superb text.John W. Kirklin, M.D.August 1, 1979
