Preface
Air travel has demolished the barriers of distance and has eased the passage of infection from distant lands. The physician of today can no longer ignore the problems of infection but few undergraduates have the opportunity to study infectious diseases by the bedside and many postgraduates are unfamiliar with infections still widely prevalent in many parts of the world. Moreover, the increasing numbers of immune-deficient patients have encouraged the spread of opportunistic microorganisms and added a new dimension to the age-old problems of infection.
This Atlas is designed to test the student's knowledge of commonplace infections, which form such an important part of everyday practice, and provide a challenge to the more experienced physician who is likely to encounter unusual and exotic infections in travellers. Emphasis has been placed upon the clinical aspects of infection but the understanding of disease would be incomplete without some knowledge of the basic microbiology and pathology, so we have included relevant questions on these subjects. An index has been provided to enable the reader to use the tests in a constructive manner by relating the individual photographs and text on a single disease.
