PUBLISHER'S NOTE THIS PIONEERING Dictionary of American Slang took more than ten years to produce. Its preparation feli into two important divisions: the first was the vast amount of material Dr. Harold Wentworth compiled and the second was the adding of even more material, the preparation of the Appendix, and the final redefining and editing done by Stuart Berg Flexner. By and large, Dr. Wentworth's chief interest has been in the area of regionalisms and colloquialisms, in which he has already gained an enviable reputation with the publication of his American Dialect Dictionary in 1944. Mr. Flexner's interest, besides the final shaping and editing of the dictionary itself, has centered on the slang of the recent and contemporary worlds of jazz, Prohibition, the armed forces, teen-agers, business and politics, the underworld, various fields of entertainment, etc. He was alsó able to include, for the first time in any dictionary, those derogatory and taboo words which play such an important part in American slang. The result of both Dr. Wentworth's and Mr. Flexner's tremendously hard and exacting work is, we feel, a Dictionary of American Slang of real distinction and lasting value.
