Prefaceto the Dictionary of Bata Processing including Applications in Industry, Administration and Business2nd enlarged and revised edition (former title: Dictionary of Information Processing including fields of application)Since the first edition of this dictionary was issued in 1964, the number of terms in the field of data processing has increased continuously. This is largely due to the fact that the advent of each new "computer-generation" carries with it many new terms describing components, functions or procedures. In many cases these terms make their first appearance in the English language, whence they are provisionally received as such into the German or French technical language. Many times no exact equivalent can be foimd in the other language even after a considerable period of time, and the other language has to make shift with transliterations. It is this state of affairs which has prompted the authors to enlarge and revise this dictionary, which now appears under the title "Dictionary of Data Processing including Applications in Industry, Administration and Business". After having collected numerous examples, they have selected the most important and most frequently used English terms and their equivalents in French and German, and have correlated them by an example where necessary. This selection included additional terms used in fields of application of data processing in so far as they were considered relevant to or closely connected with data processing. In revising the previously existing vocabulary the authors also used termlists which had been elaborated in English by expert committees. Moreover, a number of suggestions made by the critics of the 1st edition were taken into account. The authors, both members of the staff of the German Patent Office and familiar with the latest developments of data processing techniques through their daily work, are hopeful that the new edition of this Dictionary of Data Processing will continue to be of good service to its users in the English, French and German-speaking areas of the world, and that it will make new friends among scientists and technicians, as well as among translators and interpreters.A.
