• Introduction
What is a quotation? A quotation can be defined as:
'a phrase or passage from a book, poem or play etc, remembered and spoken, especially to illustrate succinctly or support a point or an argument'.
This is the definition we've used in our search for interesting, amusing or revealing phrases or passages that people have written or spoken during the last 3000 years.
Why do people consult dictionaries of quotations? There seem to be several possible reasons:
• To check the details about a familiar quotation, or to find a half remembered one.
Who, for example, said, 'I am dying, with the help of too many physicians'?
Didn't Churchill once say something about his troubles never happening?
• To find unfamiliar quotations about a particular topic - love, death, marriage, etc.
• To find out something about an author through their sayings or writings.
• To browse through to find unexpected and interesting quotations.
We kept all these needs in mind when compiling the Bloomsbury Dictionary of Quotations. The extensive index enables you to find quotations easily; it is based on key words, listed alphabetically. For example, to find the quotations mentioned above you would look up the words 'physicians' and 'troubles'. So, if you can only remember a snippet of a quotation use the index.
