PREFACE
In the course of the author's work as technical translator, the lack of an up-to-date textile dictionary in German and English became increasingly apparent. The present work should meet this need. It should help to understand or to translate technical and commercial texts referring to textiles, in either of the two languages. The dictionary should also provide a source for the current terminology in the most important branches of the relevant technology, industry and trade. ,
Owing to the recent growth of the technical and trade vocabu- |
laries, a complete treatment is beyond the scope of a dictionary !
of convenient size. A selection was made therefore of the most widely used terms in the various textile industries and allied fields. As a rule the non-technical meanings of a term are not stated. In arranging the material the chief aims have been clarity and convenience, avoiding cross references as far as {
possible. :;
As it is assumed that users of the dictionary will have a working knowledge of both languages concerned, no references to grammar are made, and only the genders of German substantives are indicated. In general British orthography has been used; specifically American terms are marked (A).
Technical and trade expressions in general use are not always grammatically correct. In such cases the customary term was chosen at the expense of grammatical exactitude. In addition, textile technical terminology has not yet been standardised. Many terms may have acquired diflferent meanings according to ;
locality or trade. Doubtful cases were decided, by selecting the terms adopted in the majority of publications in that particular .
field. Indications in brackets, stating the special field of application, were added where they were necessary in order to avoid misunderstanding.
Suggestions for correcting or amplifying the dictionary i,,
will be welcomed. '/
