F'ollowing the success of the first edition of the Directory of Hungárián Exporters/Suppliers 1992, ITD Hungary has decided to launch the book again in early 1995. The editors were convinced that, now that Hungary has overcome the initial, turbulentchanges of the economic transformation, they would have a much easier job collecting and processing the data of major Hungárián suppliers and exporters. This, however, is not the case. Although the number of companies involved in foreign trade has surged to a record number of 60,000, only a fraction qualifies for listing in our Directory. Most of the 60,000 are small and medium-size enterprises and, in many cases, foreign trade plays only a marginal role in their activity. Alsó, quite a number offirms are set up only to conduct one or two transactions and then simply wind up and disappear. No one could even guess the number of "dummy" trading companies which serve as coverto carry out obscure orillegal businesses, nowadays a widespread phenomenon throughout Central and Eastern Europe. To find out which are the most significant suppliers and exporters, we have resorted to the database ofthe customs authority in which each and every export transaction is meticulously registered. We have retrieved the data of those companies that had at least HUF 10 millión in export revenuesin 1993, the latestavailableyearly figures. Nearly 3,500 companies have been selected, whose exports represent more than 90 percent of the totál Hungárián exports.
