PREFACE In keeping with the best tradition of historical writing, Dr. Doby has given us in this volume a straightforward account, in language that can be read by layman, doctor, or the more mature histórián of medicine with sheer pleasure. Coming from a country in which historical approaches to medicine and science have long been cultivated, he brings the fresh point of view of a European scholar. But he gives more than this, for he provides us with many new and originál illustrations never before seen in the historical literature of physiology. The book contains a sensitive and discriminating study of the lives and labours of the great forerunners, contemporaries and followers of William Harvey. The personalities of these men in many ways are as interesting as the discoveries that they made. The literature of the discovery of circulation is replete with repetitious accounts, often based on secondary sources.
