PREFACE TO THE SIXTH EDITION
This book has been extensively revised for this new edition, and the publication in 1960 of my shorter book Clinical Neurology has enabled me to make Diseases of the Nervous System somewhat longer than before, and therefore more com-prehensive. This edition reflects more than any previous one the growing over-lap between neurology and generál medicine. This is shown in the sections dealing with acute porphyria, hepatic failure, biochemical disorders associated with mentái retardation, the neuromyopathies associated with carcinoma and other neoplasms, polymyositis and the myopathies which occur with the collagen disorders, muscular disorders due to thyroid disease, the effects of disturbed potassium metabolism, and the numerous metabolic causes of coma. Much of this is new material. Considerable additions have been made to the chapters on Extrapyramidal Syndromes, Disorders of Muscle, and Psychological Aspects of Neurology. There are alsó a number of new illustrations.
I am indebted to Mr. Charles Keogh for his help with the sections dealing with disorders of the pharynx and larynx, and for drawing several illustrations, to Miss Peggy Orton for her help with the section on labyrinthine disorders, and to Dr. Harry May for advice on the bacteriological aspects of meningitis. I am grateful to my son, Dr. Michael Brain, for his helpful comments, and to Dr. Marcia Wilkinson for kindly preparing the index. In this edition the P.N.A. anatomical nomenclature has been used throughout. In making this change, and in generál in preparing this book for press, I have received the greatest possible help from Dr. J. C. Gregory.
