WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART Divertimento in B-Flat major for 2 Oboes, 2 Horns and 2 Bassoons, KV 240 During the years 1775—77 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed six Diverti-menti for two oboes, two horns and two bassoons. The second of these, KV. 240, was written in January 1776. The autograph, of which all trace has been lost since 1945, bore the following title: «Divertimento Iltio a 6 di Amadeo Wolfg. Mozart nel Gianaro 1776». The composer presumably intended these six works to be published in one volume, and they had obviously been composed for the arche-piscopal court in Salzburg, to be played either at table or in the garden. The instrumental complement — without clarinets — certainly corresponds to the then prevailing conditions in Salzburg. Their structure also conforms to the entertaining Divertimento-category. «They are true garden music, in which the sonata-like movements are kept as simple as possible and interdiange with the Menuet and other dances: a Contredanse en rondeau, a Polonaise. Pastoral characteristics come into play as well as fanfare-like horns, and although the pairs of instruments for the most part move in thirds and sixths the combined sound as well as the sound of the individual instruments is always treated with the utmost delicacy». (A. Einstein) Indeed, it is the treatment of the wind instruments which is the most admirable facet of these pieces which are so ridi in their detailed perfection. Within the very unified and well-blended overall sound the main emphasis rests on delicate shadings. In the case of KV. 240 the general texture becomes more transparent in the last movement, and even traces of polyphonic treatment can be found in this jFina e. For the rest the main melodic line is almost exclusively allocated to the 1st Oboe, although the groupings of the other five instruments are full of inventiveness and create an ever-changing pattern. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart hat in den Jahren 1775/77 sedis Divertimenti mit jeweils zwei Oboen, Hörnern und Fagotten komponiert, von denen das zweite, entstanden im Januar 1776, KV. 240 ist. Das zur Zeit verschollene Autograph trug die Überschrift: «Divertimento Udo ä 6 di Amadeo Wolfg. Mozart nel Gianaro 1776.» Die sechs Werke, die der Komponist wohl gemeinsam zu veröffentlichen plante, waren offenbar als Tafel- oder Gartenmusik für den erzbischöflichen Hof in Salzburg bestimmt. Jedenfalls entspridit die Besetzung — ohne Klarinetten — den Salzburger Verhältnissen. Audi in ihrer Struktur stehen sie ganz im Rahmen der unterhaltsamen Divertimento-Gattung. «Sie sind echte Gartenmusik, die sonatenhaften Sätze so einfach wie möglich, dem Menuett werden andere Tänze beigesellt: ein Contredanse en rondeau, eine Polonaise. Es mischen sicJi Pastorales und fanfarenhafte Hörnerklänge, und trotz der meist paarweisen Führung der Stimmen in Terzen oder Sexten herrsdit feinstes Gefühl für den Gesamtklang und den Klang der einzelnen Instrumente.» (A. Einstein) Die Bläserbehandlung ist in der Tat das Bewunderungswürdigste in diesen an Vollkommenheiten im Detail so reichen Stücken. Dabei kommt es vor allem auf die Nuancen in dem an sich recht einheitlichen und verschmelzenden Gesamtklang an. In KV. 240 ist die Schreibweise fast nur im letzten Satz etwas aufgelockerter, wo sogar Ansätze zur Polyphonie vorhanden sind. Sonst liegt die melodische Führung beinahe ausschließlich in der ersten Oboe. Die Gruppierung der fünf übrigen Instrumente aber ist sehr einfallsreich und zeigt sich in stets wechselnden Gestalten.
