Divertimento in F Major (K. 247) and March (K.248) W. A. Momart. The Divertimento is an instrumental Suite with parts for solo instruments, comprising a pot-pourri of dances or of the airs of an opera. It belongs, with the Cassation and Serenade, to the genre of entertainment music (Divertimento entertainment). These Serenades and similar " social" musical works flourished in the 18th century, and are mostly connected with the names of Mozart and Haydn. After the middle of the century the Divertimento gradually developed into the String Quartet, Quintet, and similar musical forms. It was also the forerunner of the Symphonic form, being developed from the Partita and Suite, which were created by Lully and J. S. Bach. Two of the numerous Divertimenti— the F major (K.247) and B major (K.287) are the most important ones. They were written for String Quartet and two Horns. Mozart composed them in two successive years for the birthday (June 13th, 1776-1777) of the Countess Antonia Lodron. (He had already written a Concerto for three Pianos (K.242) in February, 1776, for the Countess and her daughter). The date of the first performance is not known. Both were performed on October 1st, 1777, in Graf Salem's house in Munich. The composer wrote to his father on October 22nd, 1777: (Letters, 1st volume, p.67) " gestern war ich abermahl beym graf Salem, und heut speiste ich gar da. diese 3 täge speillte ich mir genug ; aber doch recht gern . . . beym graf Salem spielte ich die drei täge durch viel] Sachen von köpf, dan die zwei Casationen fur die gräfin, und die final musick mit den Rondeau auf die letzt, auswendig. Sie können sich nicht einbilden wass der graf Salem fiir eine I W. A Mozart Divertimento F'dur K.V.247 und Marsch K.V.248. Das Divertimento ist eine mehr oder weniger stark mit Tänzen durchsetzte Instrumentalsuite in Solobesetzung und gehört mit Kassation und Serenade zur Gattung der Unterhaltungs— (" Divertimento " — Unterhaltung), Ständchen—und Gesellschaftsmusik, wie sie im 18. Jahrhundert zu grosser Blüte gelangte und vor allem mit den Namen Mozart und Haydn verknüpft ist. Nach der Jahrhundertmitte geht das Divertimento allmählich in das Streichquartett resp.—quintett über. Auch Vorläufer für die Sinfonie ist es mit seinen Geschwisterformen geworden ; seinerseits aber geht es wieder auf die alte Partita und Suite zurück, die durch Lully und J. S. Bach gross geworden ist. Unter den zahlreichen Divertimenti, die Mozart geschaffen hat, stehen zwei oben an, das in F-dur KV. 247, und das in B-dur KV. 287. Sie sind beide für Streichquartett und zwei Hömer bestimmt und in zwei aufeinanderfolgenden Jahren (1776 und 1777) zum 13. Juni, dem Namenstäg der Gräfin Antonia Lodron in Salzburg komponiert worden, für die und deren Töchter er im Februar 1776 auch das Konzert fiir drei Klaviere KV. 242 geschrieben hatte. Uber die " Uraufführung " wissen wir nichts. Am 1. Oktober 1777 erklangen sie beide in München beim Grafen Salem. Unterm 2.
